Art and Culture in Val Venosta

Between History, Nature, and the Region

Here, history, art, and culture become truly tangible. Numerous buildings date back to the early centuries, while discoveries surrounding the Iceman offer insights into a civilization thousands of years old.

Embark on a journey through the cultural region of Val Venosta along the “Alpine Road of Romanesque,” which connects South Tyrol with the neighboring Val Müstair in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. Along the way, including the area around Silandro, Romanesque monuments such as churches, monasteries, and castles tell stories of bygone eras and ancient trade routes. The region has always played an important role as a transit valley.

Sightseeing in Val Venosta

Discover the Church of St. Proculus in Naturno with its fascinating medieval frescoes from the 7th century, or the St. Ägidius' Church from the 12th century in Silandro, as well as the Marienberg Monastery in Malles, situated at 1,350 meters above sea level and considered the highest Benedictine abbey in Europe. The picturesque Kastelbell Castle is also well worth a visit: it majestically sits atop a rocky outcrop above the Adige River and can be explored on guided tours.

Take excursions to the nearby Resia Pass, where a solitary church tower rises from the reservoir, visit Churburg Castle in Sluderno with its impressive arcaded courtyard and significant collection of armor, and discover the medieval town of Glorenza.

Museums in Silandro and South Tyrol

As diverse as the valley itself are the opportunities to discover its museums – and with each visit, you’ll get to know a new facet of the region. In Silandro, you’ll find the avimundus National Park House, which showcases the birdlife of the park. Another highlight is the famous Messner Mountain Museums by extreme mountaineer Reinhold Messner, including the MMM Juval Castle in Val Venosta and the MMM Ortles in Solda.

In addition to the well-known museums, it is often the smaller ones that vividly convey life in Val Venosta. At the “Vuseum” in Sluderno, you can learn more about the valley’s culture, traditions, and history. The Silandro Library features a local menhir exhibition. At the ArcheoParc in Val Senales, you can immerse yourself in the world of the Iceman “Ötzi.”

Experience Nature and Landscape

Visitor centres in the Stelvio National Park

The Stelvio National Park is one of the largest protected areas in Europe, spanning several Italian provinces. In addition to the avimundus National Park House and its birdlife, there are five other visitor centres that provide insights into topics such as nature, landscape, and life in and with the national park.

Due to the significant differences in altitude – from 650 meters above sea level in the valley to over 3,900 meters in the glacier regions – all alpine vegetation zones are represented here. If you wish to understand these better, the visitor centres offer an excellent introduction and fascinating information about the national park.
